While we think a lot about the fasteners manufacturing, we often ignore the fact about the material used mostly in their production. Considering the materials used in manufacturing of the fasteners, carbon steel gets used in the processing of Over 90 % of all fasteners. This it can be said that Non ferrous material is only used in case when a fastener is required for a “Different than usual” application.

Carbon steel

Carbon steel is one of the widely chosen materials for making fasteners, and it also offers a wide range of reasonable combinations of strength properties, and it is also cheaper in comparison with other frequently used fastener materials. The mechanical properties are receptive to the carbon content. For fasteners manufacturing, the more common steels are usually categorised into three groups which are

  • Mild steel– Mild steels normally comprise of less than 0.25 % carbon and can’t be reinforced by heat-treatment as that could only be possible through cold working. The mild steel material is comparatively flexible and weak, but got great ductility and toughness; Moreover, it is machinable, weldable and is generally less expensive to process
  • Medium carbon – Medium carbon steels comprises of carbon content in the range of 0.25 % to 0.60 %. This type of steel can be treated in heat by austenizing, quenching and then molding the material to enhance its mechanical properties. The simple plain medium carbon steels gets hardened slowly  and usually get through heat treatment under thin sections with faster quenching rates. This more or less confirms the fact that the metallic properties of the fastener would depends on its end size. While measuring it from strength to its cost, the heat-treated medium carbon steels offers marvelous load transportation ability. They also acquire an enormously low yield to tensile strength ratio; enabling them to be more supple.
  • Alloy steel– Carbon steel can be categorized as alloy steel if the manganese content within it exceeds 1.65 %, silicon or copper exceeds 0.60 % or when chromium content is less than 4 %. Also, if a particular least amount content of aluminum, titanium, vanadium, nickel or any other element has been included to attain the desired results. While inclusion of chromium, nickel and molybdenum enhance the capability of the alloys to get treated in heat, further giving push to a broad assortments of strength to ductility arrangements.

Inconel and Hastelloy

Inconel and Hastelloy can be termed as wonderful materials for applications where fastenings should provide high potency and confrontation to corrosion in extreme temperature based atmosphere such as high temperatures or different acidic environments. several grades of Inconel and Hastelloy, in which most of them are proprietary, and usually coming up along with their strength and anti corrosion characteristics.

Aluminium

The best characteristics of Aluminum are its being lighter in weight. A Metal which was once known as an individual expensive metal now comprises with a whole bunch of alloys. While Aluminum can be used and mixed with other metals to generate and produce appropriate alloys with variety of industrial and consumer goods.
